A dry goods store was operated by John Edwin Scott in Ottawa, Illinois, who moved to Chicago to become the first partner of Samuel Carson and John T.Pirie.He became the owner of the dry goods store which is known today as the Carson Pirie Scott & Co. Robert L. and Frederick H. were two sons of John Scott, who were members of the department store firm.
Carson Pirie Scott & Co. borrowed an amount fo $108 million in 1980 for diversifying the business, in order to buy Dibbs Houses Inc., which is a caterer for the airline and owner of Toddle House and Steak 'n Egg Kitchen restaurant chains. Just like the County Seat clothing chain, these were sold in 1988.
P.A. Bergner & Co. which was founded in Peoria acquired Carson Pirie Scott & Co in 1989. It also operated the Bergner's, Charles V. Weise, Myers Brothers, and Boston Store chains.
